Tsukihazushi-Uchi

Tsukihazushi-Uchi translates as ‘evading a thrust and then striking.’ This is the tenth of the twelve basic Seitei Jodo skills that are learned and practiced. It is the first of the specialty skills… responding to a thrust.

  • What is being demonstrated? Evading a thrust, striking the sword
  • What is the intended target? The sword.
  • What is the starting stance? Tsukihazushi-no-kamae.
  • What is the very first move? Flip the jo vertically to deflect the incoming sword.
  • What is the required footwork? Slide left and then forward.
  • What is the required handwork? After going vertical, release the left hand and reconnect at the other end of the jo.
