Tai Atari

Tai Atari translates as ‘body strike.’ This is the eighth of the twelve basic Seitei Jodo skills that are learned and practiced. The goal here is to demonstrate the last of the three repels in response to a strike.

  • What is being demonstrated? Repelling a strike to the head
  • What is the intended target? The sword hilt.
  • What is the starting stance? Tsune-no-kamae.
  • What is the very first move? Flip the jo horizontally and catch the end with the left hand.
  • What is the required footwork? Slide left, back right, and then forward.
  • What is the required handwork? After catching the sword, rotate the jo to vertical and then push.
