Makiotoshi translates as ‘rolling down.’ This is the sixth of the twelve basic Seitei Jodo skills that are learned and practiced. The goal here is to demonstrate the first repel in response to a strike.
- What is being demonstrated? Repelling a strike.
- What is the intended target? The sword.
- What is the starting stance? Honte-uchi-no-kamae.
- What is the very first move? To yield briefly.
- What is the required footwork? Slide back, slide forward and chase as necessary.
- What is the required handwork? Rolling the jo first up, then down (tracing out a crescent moon).
