Gyakute Uchi

Gyakute-uchi translates as ‘reverse hand strike.’ This is the second of the twelve basic Seitei Jodo skills that are learned and practiced. Another way of thinking of the reverse hand grip might be ‘thumbs opposed.” The goal here is to demonstrate an understanding of maintaining good spacing with the reverse grip.

  • What is being demonstrated? Proper extension throughout the skill.
  • What is the intended target? The temples.
  • What is the starting stance? Gyakute-uchi-no-kamae.
  • What is the very first move? Stretching the staff (front arm raising, rear arm pulling back).
  • What is the required footwork? Step while striking.
  • What is the required handwork? Each hand moves to the end of the staff and returns (pinkie-pinkie).
