Dobarai-Uchi

Dobarai-Uchi translates as ‘strike in response to a cut to the abdomen.’ This is the eleventh of the twelve basic Seitei Jodo skills that are learned and practiced. It is the second of the specialty skills… responding to a sweeping cut to the midsection.

  • What is being demonstrated? Responding to a do cut.
  • What is the intended target? The sword.
  • What is the starting stance? Honte-uchi-no-kamae.
  • What is the very first move? Stretch the jo (both hands moving to finish ‘thumbs-out’ at each end).
  • What is the required footwork? Stepping back with the left, stepping in after striking the sword.
  • What is the required handwork? After looping to thumbs-out, loop back to shake-hands grip.
